Melbourne based sisters Bliss and Bonnie Adams founded Marble Basics in 2014 as an homage to their signature pared-back, timeless design aesthetic, albeit always infused with a sense of playfulness. Their dedication to Marble, a durable and enduring material is channelled in contemporary, basic and everlasting products, all thoughtfully designed by the sisters.
Marble Basics was conceived with the idea to bring an incredibly beautiful, luxurious material in an accessible, aesthetic way to homes. We were first to market with our brand solely using Marble in this way and we are very proud of being the home of the original Marble homeware.
NOT JUST MARBLE – what’s in a name?
While working with a team of dedicated artisans over the past five years, our eyes have been opened to the most wonderful world of handicrafts. We have expanded our range and used our core material as a building block to seamlessly integrate other materials and textures into our collection of simple and clever design objects that we have become so revered for. You will find tactile metal objects and perfectly useful dining utensils, among so many others. While our name is indeed ‘Marble Basics’ – we have extended our offering by adding layers of materials and products. Just like our love of honest and eclectic homes, each different and unique to those who reside in them, our brand is an offering of the same – things we love in varying textures and we are not bound to any one material, just like our own homes are not.
ARTISINAL CRAFT – Radical Transparency
You may be wondering why we choose to have a team of artisans in India and not locally. India is renowned for its beautiful, completely natural (no reconstituted or manmade stone here!), superior quality Marble. We specifically use stone from India for these reasons, so if we produced it here in Australia, we would be quarrying and importing this stone anyway which is counterintuitive. Putting our trust in experts in their field in India is the best way we can conceive our product to the absolute highest degree. Each piece is carved mostly by hand, allowing the finished product to resonate with its owner like an artwork. The qualities of artisanal individuality and craft, coupled with variation in the stone is an aesthetically remarkable combination. All of our Marble is quarried in locations only known to us in India, sorry but we can’t share everything! We love visiting our team in India and designing here in Melbourne for our local and international customers. Seeing our product made by artisans using techniques passed on through generations is a special part of our design process.
